55+ Positive Lifestyle provides a range of activities in village halls accross Mid Devon. Their grant of £500 helped the group to set up a new range of health and fitness classes tailored for older people, including seated exercise sessions and stretch and relax yoga.
"As a small local charity working with older people we find it increasingly hard to raise funds to develop and sustain work. The Foundation is essential to groups like us, with friendly, accessible staff, practical advice and a straightforward, simple and quick application process.
This project works with horses to help youngsters with Autism, Aspergers, ADHD and mental and emotional difficulties. Their grant of £6,980 was used to buy equipment to start up a pony club for children with ADHD, autism and aspergers.
"These youngsters often find it impossible to take part in everyday social and learning activities. Through helping them develop a special bond with the ponies based on trust, we have created an environment where they have the freedom to play and experience new things. They go home tired and happy. Thanks to the grant, we can now help even more youngsters with these conditions."
Beacon Wheelchair Dancers caters for men and women of all ages and helps both able bodied and wheelchair users to dance together. Their £1,500 grant helped to fund a pilot project bringing dancing classes to wheelchair users in East Devon.
"People in wheelchairs often miss out on special activities like dancing, or have to take part in sports and activities purely designed for wheelchairs. This is a fun, friendly way for them to share an activity with able bodied partners and to keep fit at the same time. The grant from Devon Community Foundation has helped to take our service into new parts of Devon and reach people often excluded or isolated because of their disabilty."
