FACT:
■ The Samaritans will receive a call every 7 seconds at Christmas.

“For some people at Christmas a Samaritan is literally the only person they speak to during the day,” says Trudy, a Samaritan volunteering in Devon. Loneliness, a chronic, daily condition for so many, gains an extra sting during Christmas. It becomes a dreaded annual reminder of the gaps in peoples’ lives and is the main factor behind the spike in the number of calls to the charity which will be open throughout the Christmas period. In the time it has taken you to read this, they will receive three calls from someone in desperate need.

Devon Community Foundation has supported 99 groups this year providing counselling and helpline services to local people in need.
