A little grant from Devon Community Foundation scored a lot of goals with Newton St Cyres Football Club.
The group successfully applied for a grant of £400 from the Sport Relief programme, managed by the Foundation on behalf of Comic Relief. The programme aims to use the power and passion of sport to tackle the exclusion and isolation experienced by some of the poorest and most disadvantaged communities. Sport Relief fund projects using sport as a vehicle to increase access to sport and leisure for people facing social exclusion and isolation, to help people who are experiencing difficulties in their lives and to encourage people to take part in sporting activities that bring communities together.
Newton St Cyes Football Club received a grant of just £400 towards the cost of setting up a youth development section at their Club. Their grant was used to establish teams for the under 10s, the under 15s and under 16s and to buy equipment for them. Their money was carefully invested in new goals, training bibs, team strips and enough footballs to enable the teams to start practicing.
The teams are open to any one from the local community, regardless of ability, disability or gender and the Club aims to ensure that all children participating are made to feel part of a team and proud of their Club. The teams are very active and take part in an annual tournament with more than 140 other teams from across Devon.
One new member has hearing difficulties and also suffers from problems with his eyesight. He came to Newton St Cyres Football Club having been rejected by his local Club where, after being told he was "no good", he was asked to leave the team. He is now the Under 16 Team's goalkeeper and was recentlly made Player of the Year by his fellow team mates. His confidence, having taken quite a knock at his old Club, has gradually been built back up and he is now one of the Club's key players.
