"The children worked towards certificates, which gave them a real sense of achievement."
Based in Plymouth, All Nations Ministries aims to relieve poverty, financial hardship and distress for young people from African and Czech Republican communities by setting up leisure and recreational, play and sport activities, as well as health promotion, advice and providing information and interpretation and translation services. Their activities include providing general advice and information and interpreting. They also organise monthly community meetings at which drug and alcohol, crime and other issues are discussed.
The group received a grant of £4,985 from the Plymouth Neighbourhood Renewal Community Chest to cover the cost of swimming and football sessions for young people attending the "Wake Up All Nations Youth Club"
Both activities were very well supported and resulted in fostering good community relations, with the children mixing well with their peers and sharing common interests. There were also health benefits and without this grant, many of the children from low income families would not have been able to take part in these activities.
The highlight of the project was an international football and sports competition at the Mayflower Centre which involved 140 young people. The winning team was awarded a small trophy and individual members received medals. Everyone enjoyed the event and they all benefited from working together and integrating with the local community. The activities our grant funded resulted in increased confidence and self esteem in those who took part and helped to reduce feelings of isolation.
