Totnes Young People's Theatre

"I'm learning about the different cultures and different aspects of life."

Tales from the Keep was the name given to a project that facilitated arts based workshops for members of Totnes Young People's Theatre and other young people from the local community. Working with a variety of professional artists, young people collaborated in the disciplines of drama, performance writing, visual art, textiles, film making, puppetry, choreography and dance.

During the course of the workshops the young people were encouraged to research and generate their own material which, under the guidance of professional artists, culminated in brand new works performed in Totnes Castle as part of a one day community festival.

The group successfully applied for a Local Network Fund grant of £2,990 which enabled them to run two series of workshops in collaboration with Value Theatre, one in the Atkinson Juvenile Detention Centre and the other with a group of young carers. Both groups participated in drama, story telling and mask making workshops. Not only did the workshops culminate in a one day Festival of Performing Arts in Totnes Castle but they also resulted in two new commissions to be performed at a parade and in the Castle. Totnes Young People's Theatre was also successful in engaging a group of homeless young people - ex-offenders living in a local hostel - who created the soundtracks for the shows and took part in a hip hop performance.

"David's had a wonderful week (rehearsing). He's come home buzzing every day from all the different things he's been doing. He's had a brilliant time!"  Parent

"It made me think. It made me be adventurous."
